School of Continuing Education of Hong Kong Baptist University Launches its first Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Programme

07 MAY 2019

Hong Kong has the highest average life expectancy in the world, but meanwhile the ageing population is also bringing much pressure to our healthcare system. To respond to the increasing demand in healthcare services, the School of Continuing Education (SCE) of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is launching its first Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Programme in the 2019-20 academic year, which is accredited by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (NCHK). Graduates are eligible for registration as Registered Nurses (General) with NCHK upon successful completion of the Programme.

Prof. Ronald Chung, Dean, SCE finds the successful accreditation of the nursing programme a very encouraging move forward.  He said: “After years of preparation, the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Programme, being the first Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing awarded by HKBU, will commence this September. We strive to nurture a new generation of healthcare practitioners equipped with both Chinese and Western medicinal nursing knowledge to meet the growing need for the rapid expansion of public and private medical services, and the coming establishment of the Chinese Medicine Hospital in 2024. Building on the success of the School of Chinese Medicine of HKBU, our Programme will enjoy a unique edge by incorporating Chinese medicinal nursing elements into its curriculum as a distinctive feature, enabling our graduates to be more competitive in academic and career advancements.”

Dr. Sharron Leung, Head of Nursing Education, SCE, shared: “The Programme will be taught by an experienced academic team comprised of PhD holders with at least ten years of clinical and ten years of teaching experiences. The newly established nursing skill laboratories have adopted the design of clinical setting of a private hospital. Students will receive comprehensive clinical placement at public and private hospitals, clinics and community settings.  Apart from serving in hospitals, graduates could also work as Registered Nurses in various organisations such as Correctional Services Department and pharmaceutical companies etc.”

The five-year full-time Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Programme consists of Major Required Courses (120 units), Elective Courses (6 units) and General Education Courses (31 units) with a total of 157 units, including an overview of Chinese Medicinal Nursing, service-learning activities and about 1,500 hours clinical practicum. The tuition fee will be paid by ten instalments with HK$47,100 each. Students can apply for financial assistance and scholarships offered by the School and Government.

The School is organising information talks on 11 May, 8 June and 8 July, to introduce the programme details and career opportunities. For more information, please visit the programme webpage at hkbusce.hk/dnebn, or call 3411 5426.
