HKBU SCE Organises 5-day Study Programme on
Basic Education in Hong Kong
Helps teachers and students of Hunan First Normal University understand the philosophy and development of local and international basic education

(Hong Kong, 2 November 2016) In support of “Rural Primary Teachers Training at Government Expense”, a scheme implemented by the Ministry of Education to train quality teachers on a large scale for rural schools while sponsoring underprivileged secondary students to further their studies in normal universities and secure stable teaching jobs after graduation, the School of Continuing Education (SCE) of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) organised a “5-day Study Programme on the Basic Education in Hong Kong” for Hunan First Normal University (HNFNU) for the second consecutive year. Held from 17 October to 21 October, the Programme aimed to equip participants with deeper understanding of the philosophy and development of basic education in Hong Kong and worldwide, broaden their horizons and enhance their teaching standards and outcome, thus improving the quality of education in rural areas.

The Programme was conducted in Putonghua and English, with seminars delivered by SCE scholars and sharing sessions given by seasoned educators, covering a wide range of topics from “Overview of Basic Education in HK”, “Quality Assurance in Basic Education” and “Curriculum Reform in Basic Education in Local Context”, to “Curriculum Development in Basic Education in Selected Global Contexts” and “Enhancement of Learning Effectiveness in Basic Education”. Apart from visiting the HKBU campus and library, as well as aided, direct subsidy scheme and international schools, the participants also attended a class with HKBU students of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Early Childhood Education programme, interacting with each other to share their learning experience, educational philosophy, teaching methods and curriculum design, etc.

The 38-strong group consisted of four teaching and administrative staff of HNFNU and 34 outstanding pre-service primary teachers of different subjects. Li Yi Xuan, one of the participating students said, “Those professional, rewarding seminars and sharing sessions explored both concepts and real life examples. They did not only deepen our understanding of Hong Kong education, but also offered us plenty of insights and constructive opinions.” She added that she was impressed by the professionalism and caring attitude of the teachers during the school visits. Another participant, Xu Ying Hong, said that the whole-person education in Hong Kong fully demonstrated the function and values of education. “I will do my utmost to apply the advanced education beliefs and effective teaching methods learnt from this Programme to the basic education in rural areas, helping the children there to let their dreams fly high.”

“Rural Primary Teachers Training at Government Expense” is a teacher training scheme executed by the Ministry of Education. Students are recommended by and selected from different villages and towns in China. Their tuition and miscellaneous fees are paid by provincial governments, and financial aids such as bursaries are also provided. Graduates are required to teach in rural primary schools in villages and towns that are under the scheme for not less than five years.
