English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers / Principals

Programme Features

The School of Continuing Education, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU SCE) is commissioned by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) with the grant from the Language Fund to launch the “English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers – Levels One and Two” and “English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Principals” in the 2020/21 school year.

 

Objectives

 

Teacher Programme – Level One 

The Level One programme aims at:

  • enhancing kindergarten (KG) teachers’ English language proficiency; and
  • equipping them with essential English language skills for conducting English language activities for young children in class.

 

Teacher Programme – Level Two

The Level Two programme aims at:

  • enhancing KG teachers’ understanding of early English language and literacy development / learning of young children; and
  • boosting the confidence and competencies of KG teachers in the pedagogies of exposing young children to English in the integrated / thematic approach.

 

Principal Programme

This programme aims at:

  • enhancing KG principals’ understanding of early English Language and literacy development / learning of young children; and
  • enhancing the capability of KG principals in the pedagogies of exposing young children to English in the integrated / thematic approach and devising their school plans for exposing young children to English.

Teacher Programme – Level One

Participants should be serving KG teachers who possess the following:

  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education (C(ECE)) qualification or recognisable Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF) Level 4 qualification in ECE or its equivalent; AND
  • Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Level 2 or above in English Language or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) Grade E or above in English Language.

(Remarks: Applicants are requested to provide the HKBU SCE with photocopies of the above academic qualification proof when making the online application.)

 

Teacher Programme – Level Two

Participants should be serving KG teachers who possess the following:

  • Certificate of Attendance/Completion for the English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers – Level One; AND
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education (C(ECE)) qualification or recognisable Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF) Level 4 qualification in ECE or its equivalent; AND
  • Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Level 2 or above in English Language or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) Grade E or above in English Language.

(Remarks: Applicants will be requested to provide the HKBU SCE with photocopies of the above academic qualification proof when making the online application.  If applicants are applying for both Levels One & Two programmes, they may provide the documentary proof of their completion of the Level One programme at a later stage.)

 

Principal Programme

Participants should be serving KG principals who possess the following:

  • Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education (BEd in ECE) or its equivalent, AND
  • Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Level 2 or above in English Language or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) Grade E or above in English Language.

(Remarks: Applicants will be requested to provide the HKBU SCE with photocopies of the above academic qualification proof when making the online application.)

Teacher Programme – Level One

The Programme consists of 3 modules with a total of 28 contact hours.

  • Basic concepts of six aspects of linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics that KG teachers are required to understand
  • How KG teachers can apply their knowledge of various aspects of linguistics to their English Language classroom
  • Manipulating classroom English activities

  1. Language enhancement for English Language teachers
  • The nature of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as well as English grammar and knowledge for adult learners
  • Effective ways of enhancing the knowledge and techniques of using English and classroom English for a KG teacher
  • Language skills enhancement strategies and different resources for teachers’ language development
  • Writing reflective action plans on improving teachers’ English Language skills

Teacher Programme – Level Two

The Programme consists of 4 modules with a total of 31 contact hours.

  • How to boost children’s confidence and ability in interacting with other people using simple English in everyday life

  • Critical stages of second language development of young children and support for the language and literacy development of children bilingual and multilingual backgrounds
  • Enhancing language and literacy development in young children with a wide range of strategies
  • Using the Whole Language approach to plan English learning activities in the contexts of classroom, school premises and the community
  • Strategic allocation of manpower and resources for English Language teaching of KGs
  • Effective lesson planning skills, e.g., basics of lesson plan on English Language teaching, adaptation and variation of tasks and materials and delivery techniques

  1. Effective English Language teaching strategies for developing oracy and literacy of young children of English as a second / foreign language
  • Position statements on the developmentally appropriate practices for children from birth through age 8
  • Manipulating English activities
  • Principles of child development and learning that inform developmentally appropriate English Language pedagogies
  • Methods of designing,  implementing and evaluating developmentally appropriate English Language activities and a wide range of effective English Language teaching strategies
  • The design and conduct of a developmentally appropriate English activity based on the teaching strategies covered in this module

The Programmes will be conducted in English. Textbooks and recommended reading materials are in English.

Participants are required to attend at least 80% of the lessons of the Programme. On fulfilment of the attendance requirement, participants will be awarded the Certificate of Attendance.

Application for admission to the Teacher Programme – Level One & Level Two / Principal Programme can be made via the HKBU SCE Online Application System between 17 Aug 2020 and 23 Sep 2020.

  1. Please download and read “Application Guide” before submitting your application;
  2. Please download and complete the “Supplementary Form (For Teacher Programme – Level One and Level Two)” or  “Supplementary Form (For Principal Programme)”,  and “Recommendation letter (for teacher use only)” or “Self-recommendation letter (for principal use only)”, scan and save the completed forms as two separate PDF files;
  3. Enter SCE Online Application System and fill in the required data;
  4. Upload the digital files of the completed “Supplementary Form”, “Recommendation letter” or “Self-recommendation letter”, a recent photo and other required supporting documents (please refer to the “Application Guide”).
