English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers

Programme Features

The School of Continuing Education, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU SCE) is commissioned by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) with the grant from the Language Fund to launch the “English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers” in the 2019/20 school year.



The English Language Enhancement Programme is a short course for kindergarten teachers. It aims at:

  • Enhancing kindergarten teachers’ understanding of early English language and literacy development/ learning of young children;
  • Boosting the confidence and competencies of kindergarten teachers in pedagogies of exposing young children to English in integrated/ thematic approach; and
  • Enhancing kindergarten teachers’ English proficiency and equipping them with essential English language skills for conducting English language activities in class.

Participants should be serving kindergarten teachers who possess the following:

  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education (C(ECE)) qualification or recognisable Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF) Level 4 qualification in ECE or its equivalent; AND
  • Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Level 2 or above in English Language or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) Grade E or above in English Language.

(Remarks: Successful applicants will be requested to provide the HKBU SCE with photocopies of the above academic qualification proof upon admission.)

The Programme consists of 6 modules with a total of 40 contact hours.

  • Principles of child development and learning that inform developmentally appropriate English language pedagogies

  1. Design of a school plan of English language exposure of young children in integrated approach

  1. Interface between the kindergartens and primary schools in English language learning/ exposure in local context in regard of readiness of young children
  • English language learning challenges faced by children in different educational stages from kindergarten to primary school
  • Curriculum, learning mode and ecological environment in primary schools with special reference to early English language learning and literacy development/ learning

  1. English language subject knowledge and skills of teachers (including but not limited to, phonics and pronunciation, grammar, connected speech and classroom English)
  • Basic concepts of English language knowledge (i.e., mainly the 5 aspects of linguistics including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics)
  • Proficiency level of English language skills (i.e., mainly the 4 skills including reading, writing, listening and speaking)

AM Session 3-hour session: 9:00 am – 12:00 nn; 3.5-hour session: 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
PM Session 3-hour session: 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm; 3.5-hour session: 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm

The Programme will be conducted in English. Textbooks and recommended reading materials are in English.

Participants are required to attend at least 80% of the lessons (i.e. at least 11 out of 13 lessons). On fulfilment of the attendance requirement, participants will be awarded the Certificate of Attendance.
