浸大商业设计高级文凭学员 夺第18届香港珠宝设计比赛学生组亚军

2017年03月06日

(Hong Kong, 6 March 2017) Jenny Choi Hoi-yee, a Higher Diploma in Commercial Design (Jewellery Design and Visual Merchandising) student from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) School of Continuing Education (SCE), clinched the 1st Runner-up award (Student Group) in the 18th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Jenny’s winning entry which magnificently embodies the Competition’s theme “Follow Your Heart”, will be exhibited at the 34th Hong Kong International Jewellery Show from 2 March to 6 March 2017.

Jenny’s creation “Tempting Heart” is a necklace made of silver, zircon, red garnet and red cubic zirconia, which took two months from design to production. She expressed that she was inspired by things in daily life. “The design concept originated from bicycles that give me the feeling of freedom, as cyclists can roam without constraints. Therefore, many parts of the necklace are movable, conveying the idea of free will brought by cycling.” she said. The two circles of the necklace represent the wheels of a bicycle. The smaller circle can move around the larger one, and both can be moved up or down depending on the wearer’s preference. When the wearer moves, parts of the necklace sway, reflecting the idea of following your heart to go wherever you want.

Jenny said that she was clueless about the production in the beginning. She thanked lecturer Ms. Clara Luk, who encouraged her to join the competition, and instructor Mr. John Chung, who helped her find the right materials and overcome technical problems. “This competition has made me realise the importance of cost control and materials selection. The satisfaction of producing the jewellery piece finally is simply beyond words.” As a commercial design student, she hopes to continue participating in different types of competitions to expand her experience, aspiring to become an interior designer or a visual merchandiser.

Ms. Luk said, “I am delighted that Jenny was able to consolidate and apply in the competition different areas of design knowledge learnt from class and came out with flying colours. Through the competition, she has gained a better understanding of the requirements for jewellery designers, and appreciated that designs with true values are those which can be turned into real works of art.” She encourages students to unleash their creativity and the power of perseverance which will eventually lead them to success.

SCE has been offering gemmology programmes for over 30 years, including part-time short courses, certificate and diploma programmes, Applied Learning Courses in Jewellery Design for senior secondary students, as well as full-time Higher Diploma in Commercial Design (Jewellery Design and Visual Merchandising). Over the years, a considerable number of SCE students have received awards in the Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition.
