Come and join us, wherever you are.
Background
Since its establishment in 1975, the School of Continuing Education of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU SCE) has been devoted to providing quality education. The HKBU SCE is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2020. To mark this special occasion, the international conference Wonder and Discovery: Celebrating Nature-Based Early Childhood Education will be organised on December 4th and 5th, 2020. This is the first international conference of the HKBU SCE funded by the Research Matching Grant Scheme.
This conference is also sponsored by the Kwok Chung Bo Fun Charitable Fund, BLD World Limited and the HeArt Touch Charity Foundation. It will take place online via Zoom video webinar and will be a valuable platform for knowledge transfer and collaboration between educators and researchers.
Introduction
Nature-based learning is a growing phenomenon. Research shows that children who regularly play in a natural environment grow up healthy, happy and smart; therefore, contact with nature should be encouraged from an early age.
There is no doubt that learning through play is crucial for a child’s development and that nature is the best play resource for children. The nature-based educational movement has gained significant support from research in recent years, which has shown that the approach encourages children to connect with nature, awakens their curiosity and exploratory spirit, and helps them respect, value and preserve the natural environment. Children are encouraged to explore the physical world with multiple senses, to discover the fascinating details and phenomena in nature, and to explore their relationship with nature.
In Hong Kong, however, the nature-based learning framework is still in its infancy. It is understood to be a long-term process of holding regular sessions in a woodland or other natural environment to promote a relationship between learners and nature. The main challenges for implementing nature-based learning in Hong Kong are parents' demands for visible positive impact on academic results and acceptance of the prospect of applying the approach in Hong Kong's concrete jungle. Nevertheless, some Hong Kong schools are integrating a nature-based component into their education strategy.
The HKBU SCE 45th Anniversary International Conference will set the stage for further development of nature-based education by bringing together experts from around the world and building awareness amongst practitioners, parents and students of trends in this area. It will provide a unique opportunity for participants to exchange knowledge about nature-based education issues in the Hong Kong and global contexts.
