Programme Aims

The programme aims at providing students with signified skills and knowledge of a greater complexity in the business. It offers an integrated understanding of Hong Kong business environment, synthesizing business knowledge while cultivating specialized competence in banking function for developing students as banking professionals. Hence, students are well-equipped with theoretical and practical grounding in business and are able to develop appropriate professional skills to achieve career goals in banking.

Academic Recognition

Under normal circumstances, graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Business (Banking) are possibly granted exemption of 10 courses out of 24 courses towards the Bachelor of Commerce from University of Canberra depending on how closely their prior learning matches with their intended studies. This course aims to provide students with an examination of the nature and management of credit risk in banking. Analysis on contemporary theoretical concepts and practical applications will be studied with various issues on risk management. Topics include:

  3. Credit risk analysis;
  4. Credit risk management and control;
  5. Estimating default probabilities for credit risk;
  6. Credit risk losses and credit value-at-risk (CVaR); and
  7. Lessons from the credit crunch.

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of major financial derivatives in Hong Kong and an overview of risk management in the financial markets. Emphasis will be placed on the pricing techniques of various techniques and the contemporary view of risk management according to the Basel Accord. Topics include:

  1. Overview of derivatives markets and financial risk management;
  2. Determination of forward and futures prices;
  3. Stock options valuation;
  4. Swaps;
  5. Exotics options and nonstandard products;
  6. The basel accord;
  7. Market risk management;
  8. Credit risk management; and
  9. Operational risk management.

This course aims to provide students with broad knowledge of the legal and regulatory environment of banking in Hong Kong. Students will also be able to apply and evaluate some legal issues related to negotiable instruments, bankers’ securities, guarantee and mortgage. Topics include:

  1. Development of the legal and regulatory framework;
  2. Role and functions of regulatory bodies;
  3. Ethics in Banking Sector;
  4. Banker-Customer Relationship;
  5. Bills of Exchange;
  6. Cheques;
  7. Guarantee;
  8. Mortgage; and
  9. Incorporated Company Security.

Students who have successfully completed 12 required courses will be awarded the Advanced Diploma in Business (Banking).

*Students can apply for Professional Certificate in Banking as an exit award upon successful completion of the 5 concentration courses in the Advanced Diploma in Business (Banking) programme.

March / July / November of every year

Course Schedule and Venue

Classes and examinations will be held on weekday evenings and Saturday afternoons (normally two classes per week) at Kowloon Tong / Kowloon East / Tsimshatsui / Wan Chai Learning Centre.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  1. Level 2 in five HKDSE subjects including English and Chinese (and up to 2 APL subjects) or equivalent; OR
  2. Successful completion of Yi Jin Diploma; OR
  3. Holder of a relevant School of Continuing Education (SCE) Diploma or Certificate or other equivalent non-SCE qualifications; or
  4. Aged 21 or above, preferably with 3 years' relevant work experience.
